About Ryan Dirksen

Ryan Dirksen began building furniture as a hobby in a San Francisco apartment, using just a few small tools. After moving to Denver in 2001, he built a collection of woodworking tools and wood, taught himself to weld, and began incorporating steel and other metals into his furniture designs. Following the sounds of chain saws in the neighborhood, and driving to visit family in the Midwest each year, he began collecting an impressive inventory of wood, adding a significant new dimension to the scope of his business.

Locating, milling and processing locally felled trees has become one of Where Wood Meets Steel’s specialties. Recycled wood slabs are unique by definition--no two are alike--and their inventory offers something not easily found in any store. They have built invaluable relationships not only with our tree sources, but with craftsmen and businesses of many disciplines in their neighborhood that help make what they do possible.

A web designer by trade, Ryan's wife Marina has always helped on the marketing and business side of things and eventually began designing custom pieces for clients. Active members of the RiNo Arts District since 2010, they purchased a shop in Globeville in 2012 and have since hired a full-time welder and woodworker.

Regardless of scale, they work closely with clients to realize their design concepts in unique and functional ways, using locally-sourced sustainable products wherever possible. They use a wide variety of materials--from reclaimed and recycled wood and steel to unique slabs, LED lighting and specialty glass--producing custom furniture pieces that are of our time, yet timeless.
